Dicentra cucullaria
Dutchman's Breeches is a small, wild version of Bleeding Heart. This delicate spring ephemeral flower has creamy white flowers so named for their resemblance to a pair of upside-down, hung-to-dry pants. A native wildflower, it is common throughout the eastern United States.
Dutchman's Breeches prefers a moist woodland location. They have lovely finely cut foliage. The one or more finely compound leaves make the plant appear fern-like. The flowers are pollinated by early bumblebees, whose proboscis is long enough to tap the nectar. Fragrant white flowers blooming in April-May. The plant goes dormant in early summer. Deer resistant. 8-12", Zone 3-8.
