Podophyllum peltatum (Mayapple)
Native to eastern North America, this woodland wildflower produces large, umbrella-like leaves up to 12" wide that unfold as the plant reaches 1–1½ ft. in height. Solitary, nodding, waxy-white flowers appear in spring, followed by fleshy green fruits that turn golden when mature. Mayapple spreads by rhizomes, forming dense mats in damp, open woods.
Goes dormant in summer, making it ideal for planting under large trees where other ornamentals may not thrive.
Height/Spread: 12–18"
Light: Full to partial shade
Zones: 3–8
