Amelanchier canadensis (Serviceberry, Shadbush)
A beautiful native small tree or large multi-stemmed shrub prized for its four-season interest and ecological value. In early spring, delicate white flowers cover the branches just as the leaves begin to emerge, creating a soft, airy display. By early summer, clusters of small crimson-red berries develop, providing tasty edible fruit enjoyed by both people and wildlife.
Its graceful, open branching habit makes it an excellent choice for naturalized plantings, mixed borders, or foundation landscapes. In fall, the foliage turns brilliant shades of orange and rusty red, offering outstanding autumn color that easily rivals invasive burning bush.
Native to Maine, Serviceberry is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions and supports numerous pollinators, butterflies, and bird species.
