Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks' (Big Bluestem, Ornamental Grass)

Andropogon gerardii ‘Blackhawks’
(Big Bluestem)

‘Blackhawks’ brings dramatic color and strong vertical structure to sunny gardens. Upright foliage emerges dark green in summer, then gradually develops red tones before deepening to rich purple-black as cooler nights arrive in late summer and fall.

Its tall, narrow habit makes it especially useful toward the back of perennial borders, in prairie-style plantings, native gardens, and mass plantings. This North American native grass performs well in lean, well-drained soils and has relatively low water needs once established.
