Aquilegia canadensis
(Wild Columbine)
A graceful and delicate native wildflower of New England, Aquilegia canadensis brings charm to woodland gardens and naturalized landscapes. Its distinctive nodding red and yellow flowers appear in late spring, often blooming for up to six weeks. The airy blooms seem to dance above the foliage and are especially attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators.
This adaptable native tolerates a wide range of soils as long as drainage is good, though it performs best in rich, moist soils with light to moderate shade. Plants readily self-seed and will naturalize over time, forming beautiful colonies in favorable conditions.
Deer resistant and easy to grow, it is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and native plantings.
