Shagbark Hickory is a large native shade tree known for its distinctive bark, golden fall color, and edible nuts. As the tree matures, the gray bark separates into long, curling plates that give the trunk its characteristic shaggy appearance.

Yellow-green foliage forms a broad canopy that provides excellent summer shade before turning golden yellow in fall. Thick-shelled hickory nuts develop among the foliage and are enjoyed by both wildlife and people. Native to eastern North America, this long-lived tree is a good choice for larger landscapes where it has plenty of room to mature.
