Ceanothus americanus – New Jersey Tea
A compact native shrub with a rich American past—its leaves were famously used as a tea substitute during the Revolutionary War. Today, it’s valued for its toughness, beauty, and wildlife appeal. Dense, deep green foliage forms a tight, spreading habit, topped in late spring with clusters of tiny white, sweetly fragrant flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Yellow-tinged twigs add subtle winter interest. Drought tolerant once established and easy to grow in sunny, well-drained locations, this versatile shrub works well in borders, native plantings, and challenging landscape spots.
