Cornus alternifolia (Pagoda Dogwood)
A beautiful and underused North American native tree prized for its graceful branching habit and outstanding multi-season interest. Pagoda Dogwood naturally forms a rounded, layered canopy with distinctive horizontal branches that give the tree an elegant architectural look in the landscape.
In late spring to early summer, flattened clusters of small white flowers bloom across the branches, filling the garden with a light fragrance and attracting a wide range of pollinators and beneficial insects. By fall, ornamental berries develop, changing from green to red before maturing to black—an important food source for birds and wildlife.
Its medium to deep green foliage turns shades of yellow, burgundy, and purple-red in autumn, adding another season of beauty. Unlike many ornamental trees, Pagoda Dogwood thrives in part shade and woodland settings, making it an excellent choice for naturalized landscapes and shaded gardens.
