A charming woodland spring ephemeral, Erythronium americanum features dark green leaves mottled with silvery-maroon, topped by nodding, yellow, tulip-like flowers in late spring. Clumps form attractive seasonal ground cover, fading into dormancy by mid-summer. Best planted in areas that receive ample early spring sun, it thrives in moist woodland soils. Native to eastern North America, it spreads naturally in colonies and adds subtle beauty to shaded or part-shaded gardens.
