Lindera benzoin ‘Scarlet Lady’ – Spicebush

A standout native shrub selected for its beauty and ecological value. ‘Scarlet Lady’ is a female spicebush that bursts into spring with clusters of tiny, fragrant yellow flowers—an essential early nectar source for pollinators. By late summer, it develops brilliant red berries that attract and nourish native songbirds. Come fall, the foliage turns a glowing yellow, lighting up woodland edges and shaded gardens.

As a host plant for the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly, it plays a vital role in native habitat support. Well-suited to the understory, it thrives in moist, rich soils and handles sun to part shade with ease. These berries are one of the best sources of energy for long distance migratory birds.

Because Lindera benzoin is dioecious—meaning plants are either male or female—‘Scarlet Lady’ requires a male spicebush nearby for pollination in order to produce its bright red berries.
