Lindera benzoin – Spicebush
A versatile, upright native shrub valued for its beauty and wildlife benefits. Spicebush naturalizes across the eastern U.S. and thrives in moist, shaded or partly shaded sites, making it an excellent choice for woodland edges, screens, and habitat plantings.
In early spring, tiny yellow-green flowers open before the leaves, offering critical nectar for native bees and butterflies. Through summer, deep green, aromatic foliage provides shelter for birds, and in fall, brilliant yellow color lights up the landscape. Bright red berries draw songbirds and migrating species alike, making Spicebush a true wildlife magnet.
