Myrica pensylvanica – Northern Bayberry
A tough, reliable North American native, Northern Bayberry thrives where many shrubs won’t—especially in poor, sandy, or alkaline soils. Its dense, fragrant foliage creates a lush, textured look that works beautifully in formal landscapes, naturalized plantings, or as a low-maintenance hedge. In mild climates it remains evergreen; elsewhere, it’s deciduous but still delivers strong year-round interest. Crush the leaves to release even more of their signature spicy scent.
Use it as a single specimen, plant in groups for screening, or place it in transition zones between cultivated gardens and wild spaces.
