Oxydendrum arboreum – Sourwood
Add year-round interest to the landscape with this distinctive native ornamental tree. Sourwood develops a graceful, pyramidal habit with slightly pendulous branches and produces fragrant white flowers from June into early July. The drooping flower clusters resemble Lily of the Valley and are an important nectar source for bees, contributing to the prized Sourwood honey.
In fall, the foliage puts on an impressive display of crimson, purplish-red, and occasional yellow tones. Slow growing and naturally attractive in form, Sourwood generally requires little pruning beyond establishing good structure and a single leader.
