A striking heirloom peony introduced by Saunders in 1943, 'Montezuma' is known for its large, goblet-shaped blooms in brilliant crimson-scarlet tones. Single to semi-double flowers feature two rows of petals surrounding a prominent golden-yellow center, creating a vibrant contrast that attracts pollinators. As the blooms mature, their rich red color gradually softens to shades of pink, adding extra interest throughout the flowering period.

Tall, sturdy stems and handsome dark green foliage give this variety a commanding presence in the landscape. Blooming in the early to midseason peony window, 'Montezuma' makes an excellent focal point in perennial borders and cutting gardens.
