Sanguinaria canadensis (Bloodroot)
Named for the reddish sap in its stems and roots, Bloodroot is toxic to herbivores but a delight in the garden. This woodland perennial thrives in moist, humusy, well-drained soil and naturalizes beautifully, especially in groups or masses. In late winter to early spring, it produces fragrant, pure white flowers above low foliage.
