Trillium luteum (Yellow Trillium)

Bring spring color to the shade garden with this distinctive native trillium. Canary-yellow flowers rise above dark green foliage that is often beautifully mottled with pale silvery-green. The blooms carry a light lemon fragrance and appear in spring before the plant goes dormant for summer.

Native to the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding regions, Yellow Trillium is well suited to woodland gardens, naturalized areas, and shaded borders. It grows best in rich soil and can also tolerate heavier clay when there is a good layer of topsoil.

This long-lived perennial can remain in the garden for many years and slowly spreads when left undisturbed. Pair it with other spring woodland plants such as Virginia Bluebells, Jacob’s Ladder, and Wild Blue Phlox, or plant among ferns that will fill in after the trillium foliage dies back.
