A native deciduous understory shrub famous for its arching branches that root into the ground and trip hikers. Grows 6 to 12 feet tall and wide, often forming sprawling thickets.
Pendulous, sweeping outer branches that take root when they touch the soil, creating natural "hobbles". Large, rounded to heart-shaped opposite leaves with finely toothed edges that turn a brilliant bronze-red or purple in autumn. Flat-topped white clusters featuring large, showy sterile outer flowers surrounding tiny inner fertile flowers.
