(Yellow Root) Native to Maine and the eastern U.S., this plant that occurs naturally in moist woodland areas, excellent ground cover. Bright green celery-like foliage in spring becomes red, yellow, orange or purple in fall. Tiny purple/maroon flowers in spring before leaves appear. Woody stems with brown outer bark, light yellow inner bark produce a deep yellow dye when crushed. 6-30 inches, part shade, deer resistant. Zones 3-9.
