Xanthorhiza simplicissima – Yellowroot
A resilient native with a colorful personality. Yellowroot forms a lush, spreading groundcover in moist, shaded woodland settings, cloaking the soil in bright green, ferny foliage come spring. Tiny maroon-purple flowers appear early, just before the leaves unfurl, offering subtle charm to the awakening garden. As the season turns, its foliage shifts dramatically to shades of red, orange, yellow, or even purple, extending its interest well into fall. Deer turn up their noses while the plant’s woody stems conceal a golden inner bark once prized as a natural dye.
